Rent an Email List - Is it Right For Your Business? Business owners sometimes need to rent email lists to communicate with customers and clients. There are many reasons why an organization would want to rent their lists. The most common reason is to create a relationship with potential clients or customers. Many organizations have a mailing list but use it only for communications related to fundraising activities. Other reasons to rent email lists include collecting demographic information on the people who use the Internet and purchasing products or services through online websites. Email marketing is the easiest way to collect this information. Some websites collect data through cookies or other tracking mechanisms placed on webpages visited by users. Others are capable of accessing the computer files on a computer without having to retrieve the information using other means. These lists can be very valuable to marketing campaigns. Marketing campaigns that depend on a mailing list to generate leads, interest in upcoming events, or build credibility are more effective when they are incorporated into a larger strategy. Marketing plans that rely solely on email lists will only be effective if coordinated with other efforts. Businesses often need to rent email lists for these reasons. However, businesses that rent email lists must make sure that the lists they rent are appropriate for their purposes. An important factor in determining whether or not to rent email lists is the frequency of use. A business that will be renting email lists rarely needs to email one hundred times per day or plan campaigns that require sending out emails at a frequency of once per day. One way to ensure the accuracy of an email list rental is to ensure that the lists are correct. An example of this would be using a double opt-in system. When a potential customer subscribes to a mailing list, they are provided with a double opt-in page that allows them to sign up for additional services or programs through the website. The double opt-in system ensures that a person doesn't sign up twice, leaving them with two separate and unrelated registration accounts. When a business uses email marketing lists to promote events, they must be consistent with whom they buy their email addresses from. If a business buys email addresses from a website and then starts their own campaign based off those email addresses, they can unintentionally brand themselves as spam. To avoid this, businesses must ask the website they are buying from if they will be allowed to use the email addresses. Many websites have strict guidelines about who can buy email addresses from them, and will only allow registered members to buy email addresses from them. Another thing to keep in mind is that if a business has not established an email list, it's best to start one before spending money renting out email addresses. A business should only rent email addresses to people who will actually be interested in their services and products. In other words, it's better to rent a ten thousand email list than it is to buy a million and hope that ten thousand people will sign up. Businesses should also check to see what the average age of the people signing up on a list is, and what kind of content they would like to see on the list. One last tip to use when thinking about renting an email list is to see if you can rent through a third party company or if it's more convenient to just go with renting directly from a website. The most convenient option for most people would be to rent through a third party site because there are often free forms that you can fill out and an email address is delivered right to your customer service department. This is especially true if the business is small and doesn't have a storefront, but they do have an easy to use website that is always updated with new information and deals. This option may be more convenient than waiting for a reply to an email and having to call customer service, but it can come with a higher price. Renting through a third party website may cost anywhere from fifteen dollars to seventy five dollars depending on how long the form needs to be filled out and how many names are being requested. Renting an email list is an option that should be taken seriously. There are plenty of reasons why a business should consider this type of list and plenty of reasons why it isn't a good idea. Some of these reasons include security of ownership and privacy of customers. If an individual tries to sign up for a list and finds that the database has already been sold to another party, they are screwed. When renting, make sure to check every possible risk and work to eliminate them as much as possible. Remember, these lists aren't cheap to buy, so take the time to do your research before spending any hard earned money on anything that could end up causing your business more damage than good.
