The Kolkata wetlands are again at risk, this time due to Government plans to extend the Metro Rail Project. Despite less environmentally destructive alternatives, Metro Railways’ proposed route for the extension is set to destroy four waterbodies which provide a number of critical ecosystem services to the local people and environment. The project is facing much community opposition, especially due to the lack of public consultation prior to the commencement of the project ,as required by legislation. Read more
