South Asia: Colombo gains parks, loses wetlands?

Concerns have been raised about the functional ability of wetlands in Colombo, Sri Lanka, following the development of a wetland park in the city’s outskirts. The Wetland Park was built by the Sri Lankan Ministry of Defence and Urban Development Authority and opened to the publiv in January 2013. It is now a popular recreation site. However, Senior Scientist Dr. T.V. Ramachandra says the paths crisscrossing the wetland inhibit the flow of water, altering the food chain and reducing the wetland’s bioremediation ability. Read more
